Worked Examples
Example 1: Finding Discount Price
A jacket costs $80, and there is a 25% discount.
- Use Tab 4: 80 decreased by 25%
- Discount = 80 × 0.25 = 20
- Final Price = 80 - 20 = $60
Example 2: Calculating Tip
Your meal is $45 and you want to leave an 18% tip.
- Use Tab 1: What is 18% of 45?
- Tip = (18 / 100) × 45 = $8.10
Example 3: Profit Growth
Profits grew from $5,000 to $6,500.
- Use Tab 3: Change from 5000 to 6500
- ((6500 - 5000) / 5000) × 100 = +30% Increase
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "percent" actually mean?
"Percent" literally means "per one hundred". So 20% means 20 out of every 100.
How do I calculate percentage change?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide the result by the absolute old value, and multiply by 100.
Is A% of B the same as B% of A?
Yes! This is a cool math trick. 8% of 50 is exactly the same as 50% of 8 (both equal 4).
How do I calculate a mark-up?
Use our Increase tool (Tab 4). If a cost is $50 and you want a 30% markup, calculate 50 increased by 30%.
