How the BMI Calculator Works
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify underweight, overweight, and obesity in adults.
Formula Explanation
The BMI is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height.
- Metric: BMI = kg/mΒ²
- Imperial: BMI = 703 Γ (lbs/inΒ²)
Worked Examples
Example 1: Weight: 70kg, Height: 175cm (1.75m).
BMI = 70 / (1.75 * 1.75) = 22.86 (Normal)
Example 2: Weight: 150 lbs, Height: 5ft 5in (65 inches).
BMI = 703 * 150 / (65 * 65) = 24.96 (Normal)
Example 3: Weight: 90kg, Height: 180cm (1.8m).
BMI = 90 / (1.8 * 1.8) = 27.78 (Overweight)

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the standard BMI categories?
Underweight (Under 18.5), Normal weight (18.5β24.9), Overweight (25β29.9), and Obese (30 or greater).
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a useful screening tool but may not be accurate for athletes with high muscle mass, pregnant women, or the elderly.
Why use 703 in the imperial formula?
The factor of 703 is used to convert pounds and inches into the equivalent metric units so the resulting BMI scale remains the same.
Does age or gender affect BMI?
For adults (20 years and older), BMI is interpreted using standard weight status categories that are the same for all ages and both men and women.
